Arsenal hero Nacho Monreal has announced his retirement, admitting: 'I can't go on!

. Former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has announced his retirement from football due to recent injury issues.

The Spain international spent six years with the Gunners, joining in 2013 and leaving at the end of Unai Emery's first season in charge. He spent time at Real Sociedad, but missed the last season completely with a knee problem.

The 36-year-old Monreal shared his retirement announcement on Instagram, thanking his former club and Spanish FA role in his career. In the same clip, he hinted at a fresh start after cutting his boots.

"I've played football for 36 years. Pro 16 years. I've tightened my body and pushed it to limits I never imagined," Monreal wrote.

“My knees are sending me a message…loud and clear. I can't go on! Am I mad? , thank you for everything.A stage is over.Another stage is about to begin..I am happy and I feel good.Once again…I feel good!!!And it gives me peace of mind

This would mark the end of a career for Monreal, which saw him play 450 games for the club and over 550 in all competitions.He also won 22 caps for Spain. , scoring once for his home country in 2016.

Nacho Monreal joined Arsenal during Arsene Wenger's tenure.

Monreal was born in Pamplona and started his career at hometown club Osasuna, where he won 2 titles in Malaga. After spending a year there,he joined Arsenaland helped them reach theChampions Leaguequarter-finals in the 2012-13 season.

A move to north London allowed him to He reunited with his former teammate at La Rosaleda, Santi Cazorla, both of whom have won multiple international senior caps, with Monreal's last appearance being against Switzerland ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
