Arsenal news: Gabriel Martinelli silences ‘consistency’ claim as decision made on ‘next Yaya Toure’

Arsenal take on Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League tonight as they aim to continue their fine early season form by picking up another three points on their return to continental action.

But there is plenty of discussion going on off the pitch in the meantime, with Gabriel Martinelli’s recent statistics shutting down previous claims over his ‘consistency’ levels. Elsewhere, Arsenal ’s transfer plans step-up after identifying a replacement for the ‘next Yaya Toure’, while two club legends are in agreement on the Gunners’ title chances this campaign.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of the Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel Martinelli shuts down ‘consistency’ claim

A number of Arsenal stars have been crucial in the club’s resurgent run under Mikel Arteta this season but perhaps none more so than Brazilian winger Martinelli, who has thrived so far this term.

Despite becoming a fully established member of Arsenal's first-team squad, he was challenged by former Gunners favourite Paul Merson to step things up in the summer, having previously accused the Brazilian of only impacting games "in flashes" and urging him to become more "consistent".

But it seems as though Merson has got his wish, with it emerging that Martinelli is currently outperforming Bukayo Saka in a key metric - leading the way for Arsenal when it comes to creativity in the final third.

‘Next Yaya Toure’ out of time

Arsenal have made a flying start to the new Premier League campaign but that hasn't prevented Arteta from making plans to bolster his squad again in the New Year.

According to a new report from Calciomercato, the Spaniard has identified Juventus ’ Manuel Locatelli as his next major transfer target, with the midfielder currently out of favour in Turin after falling out of favour with Massimiliano Allegri.

Arsenal are long-term admirers of Locatelli and are willing to part ways with Albert Sambi Lokonga in order to get a deal over the line, despite only signing the ‘next Yaya Toure’ from Anderlecht for £17million last summer.

Two Arsenal legends agree on title chances

Arsenal legends Thierry Henry and Arsene Wenger believe that Manchester City ’s form will hamper their chances of a Premier League title push this season, despite the pair believing their old club are in the conversation.

The Gunners have won seven of their first eight games of the season to sit top of the league but Henry, who was on punditry duties with CBS Sports for Tuesday's Champions League matches, said Arsenal were “back to competing” rather than title contenders.

And Wenger still put Man City ahead of his former club. "Personally I would put Arsenal just behind Manchester City," the Frenchman told BeIN Sports. "Arsenal are the second best team to have a good chance at winning the Premiership."
