Asteroid the size of a blue whale will pass Earth on Friday

Aasteroid, about the size of a blue whale, is set to pass Earth safely on Friday.

According to NASA's Near-Earth Object Research Center, an asteroid named 2015 FF is scheduled to make a approach to Earth on her August 12th.

Classified as "potentially dangerous"by astronomers, the asteroid has an estimated diameter of 42 to 92 feet (13 to 28 meters) and speeds of approximately Traveling at 33,012 km.

By contrast, the blue whale grows to about 32 meters in length, making it the largest living animal in the world.

NASA classifies asteroids approaching within 7.5 million km of her as "potentially hazardous", but there is no need to worry about this asteroid.

It is expected to approach Earth by her 4.3 million kilometers. This is more than eight times her distance between the Moon and Earth, so it's definitely not apocalyptic in the least.

NASA flags all space objects reaching within 193 million km of Earth as "near-Earth objects", and fast-moving objects within 7.5 million km as "potentially classified as “dangerous”.

Once objects are flagged, astronomers will monitor them closely for deviations from their predicted orbits and dangerously close to Earth.

NASA has tracked the orbits of all near-Earth objects since the end of this century, and it appears that the Earth will not be in serious danger for at least the next 100 years.

If a space object gets too close for comfort, NASA is working to deflect it using the recent Dual Asteroid Redirection Mission (DART) mission.

The DART mission is now 48 days after colliding with Didymus. This is a "binary" asteroid consisting of smaller rocks orbiting larger rocks. A small asteroid called Dimorphus is a precise target for NASA.

The collision is scheduled to occur on September 26th, with the goal of altering the orbit of Dimorphos by 10 minutes.
