Unemployment rates for blacks and Asians are higher than those for whites, according to analysis

Employment gaps between minority and white communities in England have widened significantly since the start of the pandemic, according to new analysis.

A study by Pro Bono Economic (PBE) calculated average unemployment data from 2020 to date and compared it to pre-pandemic statistics for 2018 and 2019.

The average white unemployment rate from the pandemic to date is 3.7%, down slightly from her pre-virus outbreak rate of 3.8%, the charity study concluded.

In stark contrast, the unemployment rate within the Black community is 9.6%, compared to 8.5% pre-Covid.

This represents a 1.1 percent increase in unemployment over the three years compared to 0.1 percent white unemployment.

Similarly, unemployment rates for people from Pakistan and Bangladesh are 7.9% and 8.5% respectively, lower than 8% and 7.4% in 2018-19.

Jansev PBE's Director of Research and Policy, Jemal, said: Coordinated action to address these inequalities requires sustained policy focus by governments.

“Both policy makers and businesses have benefited from engaging with the many philanthropic organizations that can provide essential support to minority communities and help employers reach out to those furthest from the labor market. It will benefit."

The charity warned that the way unemployment data is collated risks masking risks "regarding inequalities in the labor market."
