Bush decorated with beer cans is town’s unofficial ‘Christmas tree’

Some people are getting into the festive spirit in a rather unique way in Grimsby, but it is not to everyone’s tastes.

The Lincolnshire town appears divided over a council estate bush after someone covered it in cans and bottles, dubbing it the ‘Christmas tree’.

An array of Frosty Jack’s and Kronenbourg creates a blue theme, which is topped off with a ‘Merry Christmas’ banner.

Some see it as a bit of harmless fun, but others believes it is giving Grimsby a bad name.

Marsha Day, who lives on the estate, says the bush is a step too far.

‘I don’t really like the way it looks,’ she said. ‘It’s not what you want to see at Christmas time.

‘It’s not nice to see at all. It should be gotten rid of really, it’s just fancy littering at the end of the day.’

Some other people living on the estate agreed with Marsha, with one man describing it as ‘scruffy’.

But staff at nearby KC’s hair studio seemed to find the funny side to it all.

A staff member said: ‘It looks a mess, but it doesn’t really bother us as such. In the summer, the people who have done it were litter picking around here too so they’re not bad people.’

According to them, the decorations went up last week just in time for December but the cans and bottles are usually placed in the bush each year.

Another man, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was ‘funny’ to look at and should be ‘left there’.

He added: ‘If you got rid of it, I think it would upset the guy who put it all there. It’s just a bit of a joke really, he’s just made his own Christmas tree because he doesn’t have one.’
