Callum Roberts takes Aberdeen injury blow as Jim Goodwin rules out summer signing for 'important period'

Aberdeen as boss Jim Goodwin revealed summer acquisition Callum Roberts is set to spend a significant period on the sidelines , suffered an injury hammer blow.

Goodwin believes the attacking midfielder will miss at least eight to 10 weeks. Roberts was sidelined with a hamstring problem late in the second half of his 4-1 win over St Mirren last weekend.

The Dons already miss Jack Mackenzie and Connor Barron with long-term injuries, and fellow new boy Hayden Coulson was injured 13 minutes into his clash with the Buddies. but the scan showed the problem is not as serious as we originally thought. With Roberts' layoff, it remains to be seen whether the Pittodrie hierarchy will enter the transfer market in place of Luis Lopez and Shaden Morris, offering an option for Goodwin in the role played by the former Notts County star.

When asked about Roberts and Coulson's injuries, Goodwin said:

"Unfortunately Roberts, his condition is worse than we initially thought, and Callum appears to be out for quite some time. He has a hamstring in his tendon, so he's going to see a specialist this afternoon (August 11th) and we'll make a decision on how to treat it next week, probably eight to ten weeks." 33}

Goodwin compared the injury to his own playing experience and admitted that it was disappointing to start Roberts' time at the club this way.

He added: "It's never ideal. I was in that position as a player when I first signed for Scunthorpe many years ago. I broke my ankle in one of the first games of the pre-season, and then the next 12 weeks.

Aberdeen will face Motherwell, who have appointed Stephen Hummel as their new head coach, in Pittodrie on Saturday. And with both Roberts and Coulson out, Liam Scales could move to left-back against the Steelmen, while Liverpool loaner Leighton Clarkson played Ilvar Ramadani in the middle of the park. Ross McLory will be on the defensive next to Anthony Stewart.
