Callum Wilson returns to World Cup action as Gareth Southgate checks England's forgotten striker

Gareth Southgate checked Callum Wilson's form and fitness when narrowing down his World Cup strike options.

Eddie Howe spoke several times with the boss in England, ``Wilson has arrived,'' convinced the chief of Newcastle that Qatar could do the job. The 30-year-old Wilson is targeting his double-digit goals by November and has hit several goals before Southgate's next team is announced in September. So, back to photography in England.

Southgate's strike options are limited behind skipper Harry Kane. Tammy Abraham had limited playing time in June despite having his best season yet with Roma, scoring his 17th goal. Everton's Dominic Calvert he has Lewin injured, while Olly Watkins and Ivan his Tony remain inexperienced. The likes of Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden can play advanced roles without being traditional frontmen.

4 Cap Wilson wants a recall, Howe said: Yes, Callum has arrived. World Cup? Of course it is possible. Callum has done it before. The only thing that stopped him from being on that team on a regular basis is injuries.

"He'll want to stay healthy and contribute to the goals for us. Then we'll go back to Gareth's thinking. Certainly the ability is there, He can play games. To me he is one of the best strikers in England.

"The only question mark against his name is how many games he plays. I fervently believe that if he plays enough games, he will score enough goals to be in the team."

Scored a goal against Nottingham Forest last week. After making the decision, Wilson told MirrorFootball: I'm sure a double digit number will put you on the team.

"At the moment I probably haven't put it into action, but it's something that's on my mind and that's what I'm focused on. When I set a goal, I try to achieve it. You know where you'll get to in 15 games. It's about clearing small hurdles, a small test you put on yourself as a striker.Achieve a goal.Score back-to-back goals.Score braces and hat-tricks. We were favorites against newly promoted Nottingham Forest. I didn't score a goal in the game and it was wasted. Like the team, I will back it up at Brighton on Saturday. I have no doubts about my body.

I'm out there 70-80% because I want to help the team.It doesn't do me justice.I had a good pre-season, I'm very physical, I'm 100% fit. The more I go on the pitch, the more goals I try to score and the more records I try to achieve.”
