Chelsea news: Sporting director appointment close as Anthony Gordon opens up on transfer

Chelsea begin a hectic run of 13 games in just six weeks with a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday as Graham Potter looks to kickstart his side's season.

Ahead of that game, the Blues have finally set a date to begin interviewing for the position of sporting director. Owner Todd Boehly is currently filling the post on an interim basis, but a long-term candidate is needed ahead of the January transfer window.

The news comes as one of Jose Mourinho's former players gave insight into one of the X-rated put-downs he gave to his players and Anthony Gordon opened up on the failure of his move to the Blues. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Chelsea news.

Boehly begins sporting director interviews

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has finally set a date to begin interviewing for the role of sporting director. The Blues have been without a permanent person in that position since Petr Cech and Marina Granovskia left their posts upon Boehly's takeover.

Now, he finally appears to be ready to relinquish his interim position and hand over the reins. The Mirror have exclusively revealed that interviews will finally begin next week, following the clash with Palace.

Former Chelsea star Robert Huth has opened up on the time that legendary boss Jose Mourinho delivered a foul-mouthed put-down of his players. Mourinho won three Premier League titles across his two spells at Stamford Bridge.

Despite that success though, it appears he was not afraid to launch into his players for poor performances. And Huth has now revealed the extent of Mourinho's anger if the Blues were not performing as expected.

"If you didn't meet his [Mourinho’s] standards, he'd give you a chance, and then he'd give you another chance, but by that point if you made a mistake, your time was up. That was the environment he created, and he's the reason Chelsea became so successful," he said.

Gordon breaks silence on failed move

Everton star Anthony Gordon has broken his silence on the summer reports that heavily linked him with a move to Chelsea. Gordon became a surprise option for the Blues, who were thought to be weighing up a £60million move for him.

But the Englishman has now admitted to feeling that the links to Stamford Bridge were "crazy". He also insisted that his full focus remains on Everton, where he is a key player under Frank Lampard.

"That’s football nowadays - it’s absolutely crazy. Personally, I don’t think any player is worth that amount of money - but I’m also not going to talk myself down. You need to focus on today and tomorrow and don’t look too far into the future," he said.
