Children in tears after girl, 12, ‘thrown into air’ after being hit by car

A 12-year-old schoolgirl was ‘thrown into the air’ after being struck by a car last night.

She had been crossing Poulton Road in Wallasey, Merseyside, with a group of friends when a Honda V-Tec crashed into her and another girl, who is the same age as her.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.25pm where another driver was trying to keep the pair conscious.

The woman who witnessed the immediate aftermath of the incident unfold said: ‘I was getting out of my own car, I heard a thud and as I turned around I saw a girl in the air.

‘I didn’t see the impact, I just heard it, but when I turned I saw her in the road. The little girl who got hit second stood up but just collapsed.’

The assistant health practitioner immediately ran over to the two girls, while the driver of the Honda called for an ambulance.

As the woman attended to one of the victims, another witness looked after the other.

She said: ‘I checked the first girl, she was conscious, in a lot of pain but conscious.

‘The other girl was in a worse way so I knew that’s who I needed to pay attention to.

‘I just talked to her and told her to keep her eyes open and focus on me. I tried to make her laugh.

‘I could see she was going into shock, so my friend upstairs grabbed a blanket and threw it over her, and my neighbour got cushions to put behind her – she was already sat up.’

Both girls were rushed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool in separate ambulances.

Their conditions and the nature of any injuries are yet to be confirmed.

Poulton Road was closed in both directions while officers collected statements but it has now reopened.
