Christmas Jumper Day 2022: When is it and where can you buy the cheapest ones this year?

Is it really Christmas without a loud, festive jumper?

And luckily for those of us who love a garish item of clothing, there is a special day during the Yuletide season to celebrate the humble Christmas jumper.

On Christmas Jumper Day, people are encouraged to bring their festive spirit to school or work in the form of their favourite Christmas jumper.

Those taking part can wear a Christmas jumper they already own, decorate an existing jumper with festive decorations, or even knit their own.

But when is Christmas Jumper Day and where can you grab some bargain knitwear to celebrate?

We have all the details.

When is Christmas Jumper Day?

Christmas Jumper Day lands on a Thursday this year – Thursday, December 8, to be precise.

To join in, all you need to do is wear your best festive jumper to school, work, or just while at home.

This year marks the tenth Christmas Jumper Day, with the first taking place on December 14, 2012.

Numerous celebrities took part in the occasion, which ran under the slogan of ‘make the world better with a sweater’.

Why do we celebrate Christmas Jumper Day?

Christmas Jumper Day isn’t just an excuse to wear a vibrant jumper, it also helps a great cause.

The annual event sees Save the Children raise money for kids in the UK and across the globe.

The charity, which began in London in 1919, helps to provide food, shelter, and education for children in need.

All proceeds from Christmas Jumper Day go towards helping children around the world who are currently living in poverty.

This year, the Government has promised to match any donations given to Save the Children for the occasion.

Where can you get cheap Christmas jumpers?

December is an expensive month, so the last thing anyone wants is another expense.

Fortunately, there are a few ways you can nab a cheap Christmas jumper for the occasion.

Aldi is selling a range of festive jumpers with prices starting from £6.99 for children and £9.99 for adults.

There are even Christmas jumpers for pets priced at £3.99.

Supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Tesco all have Christmas jumpers available that won’t break the bank.

Alternatively, if you want to keep costs low while also remaining environmentally conscious, you can also shop secondhand.

This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield donned secondhand Christmas jumpers to raise money for Save the Children, The Daily Mail reported.

Speaking about the campaign, Holly said: ‘I’m really excited to be taking part in Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day again this year and I’m delighted that I get to do it alongside Phil!’

Phillip added: ‘I’m supporting Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day because I never forget we knitted squares for Save the Children when I was in infant school – so sometime last century!

‘It’s such a brilliant cause and I had so much fun trying to squeeze into that jumper with Holly!’
