SIMON Cowell paid tribute to Darius Campbell Danesh today following the news of his shocking death.
The two became close after Darius auditioned for his 2001 pop his idol. Meanwhile, Simon was a judge and was fascinated by the Scottish singer's personality.
The music mogul said in a statement tonight:
``He was charismatic, funny, and a great person to be with. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of
Darius said Britney Spears' Baby One More Time , the talent show came in third, with Gareth in second and Will Young winning.
The star's family announced today that he was found dead in his US apartment on August 11th.
During his lifetime, Darius based Simon and even one of his characters in his play on him.
In 2011, when he spoke about his reprise of the role of Chicago scheming attorney Flynn, he said he based his portrayal of the character on his old mentor.
Darius starred in Ugly Betty's star, America opposite his Ferrera on a Prohibition-era Chicago musical set, stating: The way he approaches things and I perceive it from a character perspective. ''
He credited Simon with initially persuading him to take on his role in Chicago.
He said: "I am so grateful for this experience and all the opportunities it has opened up for me, and for being able to call Simon Cowell a friend and have dinner with him." 49}
Simon wasn't the only one to pay tribute to a much-loved singer.
Gareth said in a statement tonight: }
