Do buses run on Christmas Day?

THE festive season is one where family and friends get together to celebrate the festive season.

Many people go out on Christmas Eve to celebrate the special occasion. But are they able to stay out late and catch a bus, or do they stop running on Christmas Day?

Do buses run on Christmas Day?

Buses don't run on Christmas Day, because of a long standing official bank holiday on this date, meaning that public transport will not be in operation.

Bus services such as Stagecoach and Arriva have previously warned passengers to plan their journeys on Christmas Eve before heading out, as services will stop early.

There are coach companies who do run services on Christmas Day. National express have services on Christmas Day, as part of a timetable which also covers New Year's Day.

It is a reduced service but still travels to 81 different locations in the UK. Megabus also runs a service over Christmas Day.

What public transport runs on Christmas Day?

No public transport runs on Christmas Day. This includes buses, London Underground services, National rail services and DLR.

The only services which do continue running are some taxis, private taxi bookings and London dial-a-ride, which helps people with mobility problems.

There are Santander cycles available in boroughs of London where these are available, along with electric scooters.

Even on Boxing Day, there is a reduced service on most public transport.

Sections of the London Underground will be closed, along with a bank holiday service on buses and limited services on trains.

Parts of the Elizabeth line will be closed along with The London Overground.

What time do buses stop running on Christmas eve?

Transport on Christmas Eve starts to wind down around early evening. At around 7pm, the Underground will begin getting ready to finish for the night, and most other transport services will start to slow down at around the same sort of time.

TFL encourage passengers to finish their journeys by 23:30 on Christmas Eve, as there is no night bus service.

However, there is no guaranteed time that the buses will finish for the night, this is a suggestion by TFL to make sure that people are not left stranded for the night.
