Doctor shares most 'essential' thing to stop skin ageing and look younger

Wrinkles and fine lines are all part of the ageing process as we get older, but there are ways to reduce their appearance and make the skin looks more youthful.

While expensive skincare and treatments may seem like the only option, keeping yourself looking good in older age doesn't have to cost you a fortune.

According to one doctor, simple lifestyle changes are they key to delay - or reduce - the signs of ageing.

Celebrity cosmetic doctor Dr Natalie Haworth explained that diet, sleep and exercise all play a role in keeping wrinkles at bay.

But according to the anti-ageing specialist, who is Director of The Doctor & Company, the most 'essential' tip is to always wear a broad spectrum SPF - even in winter.

"Apply a broad spectrum SPF throughout the year. There is evidence that shows that using an SPF everyday helps slow down the ageing process, so this is essential to use to prevent premature ageing," she explained.

A broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Even with a high SPF (sun protection factor), if a sunscreen isn't broad spectrum, you won't be protected from all UVA rays.

UVA is associated with skin ageing, while UVB rays are the main cause of reddening and sunburn and therefore the most damaging where skin cancer occurs.

Dr Natalie Haworth shared three more tips to help achieve youthful skin and prevent premature ageing.

Diet

"Whilst a good skincare routine is important, skincare can only go so far," Dr Haworth explained.

"What will make one of the biggest differences to your skin, to prevent premature ageing and maintain a youthful glow, is your diet. Avoid sugary, processed foods which can contribute to premature ageing of the skin."

Workout

She added: "Exercising has anti-ageing effects as it can help clear impurities through sweating, and keeps your cells young. It can also reduce inflammation and improve your circulation, all of which will help you achieve a glowing complexion."

Sleep

"Your skin repairs itself through sleep, so it's important you get at least 8 hours if you can for the health of your skin. If you don't get enough hours of rest, your skin won't be able to heal and repair the skin."
