Eddie Jones to be sacked as England manager with Steve Borthwick set to replace him

Eddie Jones is set to be sacked on Tuesday with Steve Borthwick in line to replace him as England rugby coach.

Jones, who is contracted through to the World Cup, made his case to continue at a meeting with Rugby Football union boss Bill Sweeney and a panel of unnamed ‘experts’.

The RFU refused to comment afterwards but it appears the Australian’s tumultuous six-year reign will be brought to an end when the Board meets to pass judgement.

Borthwick, who worked under Jones both for Japan and England before quitting the international scene to transform Leicester into Premiership champions, is under contract at Welford Road.

Tigers indicated last week that they would not stand in the way of the former England captain providing their compensation claim is met.

Jones took England to the last World Cup final having started his term with a Grand Slam and a world record-equalling run of wins.

He won a third Six Nations title in 2020 but since then England have tanked in successive championship campaigns and this year posted their worst set of results since 2008.

The final straw came when England were booed off Twickenham a week ago following a heavy defeat by South Africa.

Sweeney sympathised with the supporters afterwards and notably made no mention in support of Jones.

Jones’ position was then made even more precarious by his closest adviser accusing Sweeney of leaking stories about the departures of England's backroom staff.

Former journalist David Pembroke later apologised to Sweeney for referring to him as "Slippery Bill”.
