France 3 Poland 1: England learn possible World Cup quarter-final foe after Mbappe stunners and Giroud’s record goal

FRANCE booked their place in the last eight of the World Cup with a routine victory over Poland.

The defending champions ran out 3-1 winners over a dogged and determined Poland thanks to Giroud's sumptuous first-half strike and a second-half rockets from Kylian Mbappe.

A beautiful finish into the far corner breached the Polish goal and saw Giroud write his name into the history books of French football.

The former Arsenal man's strike saw him become France's all-time leading goalscorer - a record which was previously held by footy legend Thierry Henry.

And PSG hitman made sure of progression to the last eight with a sensational strike from just inside the 18-yard box - which saw him become the first player under the age of 24 to score eight World Cup goals.

Mbappe doubled his tally for the night with another rocket in the 91st minute.

Poland were given the chance to score a consolation from the penalty spot following a handball from Dayot Upamencano.

Robert Lewandowski - in likely his last ever match for his country - missed the stutter spot kick but was given a second bite at the cherry as Hugo Lloris was off his line.

And the Polish legend signed off his international career by sending Lloris the wrong way.

Victory over the Poles saw France set up a quarter-final tie with the winner of England's clash with Senegal later this evening.
