Gareth Southgate steps up England team’s home security after Raheem Sterling robbery

England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed extra security is being offered to his squad following an armed break-in at Raheem Sterling’s home.

The move came after the forward left England’s World Cup camp in Qatar to return to his family on Sunday.

Speaking yesterday, Southgate said the Football Association is considering ramping up security in the wake of the burglary at the property in Surrey.

‘Without talking about the individual details too much because I think it’s important we respect his privacy… yeah, that was something we did discuss with the players before we left.

‘I think there’s a little bit [for Raheem] in the midst of moving house that played a part in that. But we are very conscious of it. And with what’s happened, we will have that conversation again.’

After the incident, worried England stars instructed their agents to put security teams on 24-hour patrols and monitor any unusual or suspicious activity at homes, according to The Telegraph.

Surrey Police said no threat of violence was involved in the break-in at Sterling’s home in Oxshott.

But the player was absent from England’s 3-0 win over Senegal as he travelled home to be with his family.

The Chelsea star, 27, was described as being ‘shaken’ and concerned about the wellbeing of his children.

Police said occupants of the property had come home on Saturday and discovered jewellery and watches had been stolen. Officers said the investigation was ongoing.

The Sun reported watches worth £300,000 had been taken, with a family source telling the newspaper police were at the address for several hours. Support for the player flooded in on social media.

The BBC’s Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker tweeted: ‘Thoughts are with @sterling7 and his family after their awful and harrowing ordeal.’

Harry Kane sent his best to Sterling during the man of the match press conference in Al Khor.

‘Our thoughts are with him and his family,’ the England captain said. ‘It’s never easy to see one of your teammates and friends have to deal with something like that. From us as a team we send him our best and hope to see him as soon as possible.’
