Winter blackouts are planned as part of UK governmentpreparations for a "reasonable worst case scenario". Planned outages mean that homes and businesses energy are cut off for hours during the coldest months of the year.
The UK has fewer gas reserves than countries such as France and Germany, so emergency action may be taken if imports fall. To make matters worse, the cost of importing gas from abroad has increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Telegraph reports that the UK gas network has been preparing for him for more than a month and similar talks are underway for the electricity network. Distribution is a process called load shedding, common in developing countries, says Mark Nelson, managing director of consultancy Radiant Energy Group.
If Russia cuts supplies to the EU, blackouts could start in December and last for months, The Telegraph said. They say ministers have told them they may need to ration energy from 7am to 10am and from 4pm to 9pm in early 2023.
