How the UK winter blackout will work as 'months' plan already underway

Winter blackouts are planned as part of UK governmentpreparations for a "reasonable worst case scenario". Planned outages mean that homes and businesses energy are cut off for hours during the coldest months of the year.

The UK has fewer gas reserves than countries such as France and Germany, so emergency action may be taken if imports fall. To make matters worse, the cost of importing gas from abroad has increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
