I have lost my purpose in life since my partner suddenly died of cancer

FEELING ABANDONED

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVE lost my purpose in life since my partner suddenly died of cancer.

We were together for 20 years.

I am 65 and he was 69. He was experiencing breathing problems and had various tests.

His doctor said there was no sign of cancer and sent him home.

But his breathing worsened and he was quickly diagnosed with cancer.

He died six weeks later.

Every problem gets a personal reply from one of our trained councillors.

My GP only gave me a bereavement services number when I asked for help.

I’m told the hospital is organising a meeting with the medical team but I’m still waiting.

I can’t eat or sleep or get motivated.

Nobody seems to be helping me. I feel abandoned.

Deidre says: I am sorry your husband died so soon after his diagnosis.

It is still early days and you have been through a traumatic time but in the future you will be able to feel the positives of those happy years you shared with him.

You sound depressed so talk to your GP again and lean on family and friends.

My support pack Coping With Bereavement explains how grief can affect us – and the support available.
