I’m an appliance expert – the common laundry mistake that’s damaging your clothes AND machine

MOST people do laundry at least once a week, but every time you clean your clothes you might be damaging them, and your machine.

An appliance expert has revealed the common laundry mistake which may be shortening the lifespan of your dryer.

TikTok user Melissa Pateras shared the common laundry step that's damaging both your clothes and your machine.

When you're adding your clothes to your dryer, there's one item you may want to avoid using.

Melissa explained: "Stop using dryer sheets, they leave a coating of chemical residue on your clothes and your dryer. That residue coats the dryer’s sensors and it messes with the dryer’s ability to dry your clothes."

The appliance expert told her followers that using dryer sheets can shorten the lifespan of their machines.

She added: "They’re not health or eco friendly. We’ve been lied to again, we’ve just been programmed to think that we need them."

Melissa offered machine-friendly solutions to static when drying your clothes.

She detailed: "Static is caused when clothes rub against each other and then the electric static charge builds up. That’s why when you hang your clothes to dry, they aren’t staticky."

"The other part of that is moisture. It’s a combination between the rubbing together and the lack of moisture in your dryer which is caused when you over dry your clothes," Melissa added.

The expert suggested using wet dryer balls or rolled up aluminum foil to prevent static in your clothes.

She explained that wetting a dryer ball helps to keep the air in the dryer moist.

"I just used my last dryer sheet! Not buying anymore and also cut down on my laundry soap only a shot glass full now!" said one user.

Another viewer wrote: "As a personal trainer, dryer sheets and fabric softener ruin the moisture wicking in your gym clothes! High heat also ruins that too. Best to line dry."

"I knew dryer sheets were a scam but NOW I know the alternative. Thank you!" commented a third person.
