Iranian Agents Charged with Plot to Kill Former President Donald Trump's National Security Adviser John Bolton, the U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday.

The FBI has identified Shahram Poursafi, a member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as a wanted person on charges related to a murder plot for hire.

Pursafi, 45, gave his $300,000 to individuals in the United States to carry out Bolton's murder in Washington, D.C. on behalf of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He tried to pay, the DOJ said in a statement.

According to the DOJ, the hired killing plot is likely in retaliation for the January 2020 death of Iran's elite Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani.

Bolton thanked the FBI and the Department of Justice for their efforts to resolve the case.
