“It came at a perfect time in my career when I was looking for new opportunities, new ideas,” says award-winning digital entrepreneur Margaret Manning of her move to Barbados last year with the Welcome Stamp visa.

“I’ve met so many interesting people of different nationalities, from age 18 to nearly 80.They’ve found fantastic weather and great fun, but inspiration, too – and so have I.”

The founder of digital agency Reading Room says the island is attracting many sorts of professionals, from tech gurus and creatives to consultants and bankers.

Now running her startup Digital Conversations, Margaret says: “The Welcome Stamp has changed the idea of what tourism is, and what tourism could and should be in the future.

“It’s the change in the way we work meeting the change in the way we want to enjoy leisure.”

Applying online is simple and you only need an income of around £43,000 to qualify. You'll receive a decision seven business days after applying and you won’t pay a penny until you’ve received approval. The fees are about £1,700 for an individual visa; £2,500 for a family.

Once the visa is approved, you won’t have to pay any tax in Barbados. Your children will automatically get access to the public education system for a small fee, or they can attend a private school.
