Just 1 in 5 Brits back Liz Truss's mini-Budget - with Tory voters turning on PM

Less than a fifth of Brits support Liz Truss’s plans to grow the economy as many fear the policies will worsen the cost of living crisis, new polling shows today.

Research by Survation for campaign group 38 Degrees found only 19% of Brits believe the Prime Minister’s mini-Budget should be implemented.

The disdain for the Government’s economic plan rings true amongst voters who backed the Tories in 2019.

Some 65% of Brits who voted Tory at the last election hope the plans will be scrapped entirely - with all remaining tax cuts reversed - as they want public spending services to be maintained.

Over seven in 10 (71%) voters support a windfall tax on oil and gas producers to pay for the energy bills support scheme, compared to just 30% who back a real-terms cut to Universal Credit.

Ms Truss has refused to rule out spending cuts, insisting we are “not living in a perfect world”.

“I believe in getting value for money for the taxpayer” she said, promising “excellent public services”.

Conservative chairman Jake Berry claimed the Tories had a “positive” conference.

But his positivity is yet to lift the public mood as polling by the Liberal Democrats shows three in four (75%) Brits blame the Government’s budget for higher than expected mortgage rates.

The Lib Dems have accused Ms Truss and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng of “betraying homeowners” and demand the Government steps in to help those who cannot afford higher mortgage bills.

Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Sarah Olney said: “Struggling families are left to pick up the tab for this Government’s shambolic budget.

"It is time the Conservative Government cleaned up their mess.

"This should start with a new package to help people pay their spiralling mortgage bills.

"Frankly, I think Liz Truss owes every mortgage owner an apology for adding hundreds if not thousands of pounds to their bills."

Labour leader Keir Starmer said the PM had "taken the economy" and "driven it into a wall" after she accused Labour of being part of an "anti-growth coalition".

The Labour leader branded Ms Truss the "destroyer of growth", adding mortgages were rising as a "direct result" of the Government's "kamikaze mini-budget" last month.

Polling was carried out online by Survation for 38 Degrees, sampling 6,012 British adults between September 30 and October 4.
