Lanarkshire care home goes to town with own Notting Hill-inspired carnival

A care home in East Kilbride recently held its own Notting Hill-inspired carnival, bringing the culture of the Caribbean to the town.

When residents at Care UK’s Cathkin House, on Glasgow Road, expressed a desire to experience the music, dancing and cuisine of the world-famous carnival, the care team set out to create their very own celebration within the home.

Residents were treated to an afternoon of festivities, including steel pan music, and shared their best moves with a limbo dance.

The home’s chefs also cooked up an array of delicious Caribbean delicacies, including jerk chicken, rice and peas, and banana and pineapple skewers – all washed down with a fruity Caribbean-themed cocktail.

Nisha Sujeewon, home manager at Cathkin House, said: “Residents love the opportunity to try new things and we were delighted when they suggested they wanted to experience Notting Hill Carnival. Many of the residents have never experienced this, and this was a great chance for them to get a taste, quite literally, of the Caribbean and its wonderful culture.

Staff joined in all the fun

“It was lovely to see the residents smiling, laughing and dancing – we all had a wonderful day and hope to make this an annual celebration.”

Cathkin House provides dementia, nursing, and nursing dementia care, and has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence.

The home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and has plenty of space indoor, and out, to relax.
