Lanarkshire MSP calls for action on wait times for autism assessment

Lanarkshire's MSP has written to the Minister of Mental Health calling for action to address wait times for neurodevelopmental assessments.

Graham Simpson, his MSP in Central Scotland, calls on Kevin Stewart MSP to address the delays faced by young people in need of neurodevelopmental assessment.

The letter came after Mr Simpson raised local voter complaints on the issue before the Scottish Parliament in his April .

Following his questioning, he met with a group of parents from across the region to share their experiences.

Mr. Simpson said in the letter:

``Mostly young people aged 0-18 in Lanarkshire are young people wait longer for evaluations,” said the Health Board.

“Sadly, these delays are forcing Lanarkshire residents to give up on the NHS and seek alternative treatments.

``Parents also shared concerns about staffing levels within Lanarkshire's CAMHS department, with many complaining of a lack of response to enquiries. They report slow response times, administrative errors and poor communication.

“Clearly more dynamic and supportive planning is needed.The Scottish Government is working with the Health and Social Care Partnership.

"To reduce these waiting times, the Scottish Government has confirmed plans to work with the NHS Lanarkshire."

A Scottish government spokesman said: . Youth in need of neurodevelopmental support.

"Separately, we partnered with Queen Margaret University to establish the National Autism Implementation Team to help redesign autism diagnostic services.

} "The team is working with the NHS Board to investigate diagnostic pathways for autism and establish local expertise."

"The most clinically necessary, high-risk, and urgent cases will continue to be considered priority and will not be placed on the waiting list." 80}

"While there is currently a long waiting list, all referrals are reviewed daily by senior clinical decision makers, and all urgent referrals must be submitted within 2 weeks of the referral. , many are assigned clinical evaluation appointments within 48 hours of referral.

"This service continues to receive very high levels of emergency referrals and is safe and secure in all these circumstances." We are ensuring that responsive clinical services are delivered.
