London Bridge fire: Emergency services battle huge blaze as thick smoke billows sky

A large fire broke out between London Bridge and Waterloo East stations.

Firefighters are currently on scene to contain the blaze while the sky fills with black smoke. About 70 firefighters were involved in a fire at a commercial building under a railroad arch on Union Street in Southwark.

Dramatic footage shared online shows thick pockets of smoke pouring out of the building as alarms ring in the background. One of his passengers on the train said he evacuated his carriage after flames spread on the tracks and smoke entered the train, Miller reports.

A passenger whose coach stopped near the fire tweeted:

But she added later: ``The train finally turned back to London Bridge and brought us back. There are trains going through London Bridge!!! All trains to Charing Cross and Waterloo have been cancelled.”

London Fire Service Brigade said: The fire started around 9:29 am this morning.

A spokesman said, "Ten fire engines and about 70 firefighters are working on the fire under the railroad arch on Union Street in Southwark."

Smoke can be seen rising from miles away. London Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called at 9:44am to deal with the traffic restrictions.

One Twitter user shared a video of smoke rising from the scene, saying, "Fire East Waterloo #London #ClimateEmergency."

Another writes: "TheLondon fire has started on Union Street near the bridge."

Third addition: "Not good at all. Bloomberg Great fire on Union Street, Southwark, seen from our offices (north of the river).”
