Man who is an order of magnitude away from Mega Millions Jackpot wins $1,000,000 as a result of second opinion on 'losing' ticket

A Mega Millions player was just one digit away from the jackpot, but just missed out on a big prize.

Malcolm Meredith showed someone his lottery ticket in his May 20th draw, although his name was not disclosed, by the Virginia Lottery. I was told that his lottery ticket was bad.

Meredith's ticket was a number randomly selected by the computer by EasyPick and matched his first five winning numbers (33, 40, 59, 60, 69). He only missed number 22 in Megaball.

Instead of throwing away his ticket, Meredith kept it. He checked it again a few weeks later, believing he might have won something.

"I was hoping and praying!" I was.

Meredith takes her ticket to the Virginia Lottery customer service center in Woodbridge and learns that she won $1 million.

It was the only ticket in the United States to match her first five numbers in that particular draw, according to lottery officials. Had Meredith also gotten his Mega Millions number correct, he would have won a jackpot of around $131 million.

The odds of matching his first five numbers in Mega Millions is 1 in 12,607,306. The odds of matching all six numbers and winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350.

Mega Millions draws take place every Tuesday and Friday night.

Jackpot grew to $1.28 billion, second largest Mega Millions ever,one lucky Illinois player won on July 29th. All six numbers in 29 consecutive draws since April 15th.

It was the third largest lottery prize in US history. The biggest ever jackpot was claimed in 2016 for her. The Powerball game reached $1.586 billion, shared among winners from California, Florida and Tennessee.
