Meghan and 'crying' Kate's row that 'kickstarted feud and divided Royal Family'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a long and complex history with the rest of the Royal Family - but the fight that sparked the feud is still a controversial topic.

The row, which some speculate will feature in Harry and Meghan's upcoming Netflix documentary, happened in the lead-up to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding in May 2018 after Meghan reportedly made Kate Middleton "burst into tears".

Back in July, royal expert Tom Bower claimed in the book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors that the pair came to blows, among other things, over the length of Princess Charlotte's dress, which Kate "thought was too short, and anyway did not fit."

The biographer goes on to claim that Meghan's assistant, Melissa Toubati, and dress-fitters present at the scene saw Meghan "emphatically reject Kate's observation".

He claimed that the former Suits actress' icy behaviour pushed the Princess of Wales - who had given birth to Prince Louis weeks before - to tears.

"Kate had only just given birth to Prince Louis and was feeling quite emotional," a source told the Telegraph at the time.

But despite the claims, Meghan denied having made her sister-in-law cry - and, in her first bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, even asserted that the opposite was true.

When asked whether there was "a situation where [Kate] might have cried" in the lead-up to the nuptials, Meghan responded: "No, no. The reverse happened.

"And I don't say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding.

"And she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologised.

"And she brought me flowers and a note, apologising. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it."

She continued: "A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining - yes, the issue was correct - about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings.

"And I thought, in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, that it didn't make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else was doing, which was trying to be supportive, knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot.

"It wasn't a confrontation, and I actually think it's… I don't think it's fair to her to get into the details of that, because she apologised.

"What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn't do but that happened to me," the Duchess added.

The now infamous he-said-she-said debate is one of several topics that royal fans hope may be addressed in Harry and Meghan's long-awaited documentary with Netflix.

The trailer, released today (Thursday, December 1), features a series of black-and-white photos with the Sussexes providing the voiceover.

Harry says in the clip: "No one sees what's happening behind closed doors," with a shot of Meghan holding her face in her hands that then quickly flips to an image of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

"I had to do everything I could to protect my family," Harry continues.

Photos from the pair's childhoods up to adulthood are then merged together before the trailer pans to a clip of the Duchess seemingly wiping away tears.

The trailer ends with Meghan saying: "When the stakes are this high, doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us?"

Netflix said the documentary, simply named Harry & Meghan, is "coming soon", with reports speculating it will arrive on the platform on Thursday, December 8.
