Meghan Markle launches legal bid to stop Thomas Markle being deposed over defamation claim

Meghan Markle has launched a legal bid to stop Thomas Markle being deposed over a defamation claim launched by her half-sister Samantha, over claims made in last year's bombshell Oprah interview.

Lawyers for Samantha reportedly want to depose - testify to under oath or by sworn affidavit - Thomas Markle between October 5 and 21.

The Duchess of Sussex is reportedly trying to block Samantha's legal team from deposing her father until after a ruling on whether the lawsuit will be thrown out.

Meghan's legal team argue that Meghan cannot be held responsible for statements in Finding Freedom , which was written by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

The filing by Meghan's team, seen by the publication, read: "A deposition of Mr. Markle at this juncture, along with other discovery, would be an unnecessary spectacle and waste of the parties' time, money, and resources.

"[Samantha Markle] should not be permitted to force Meghan and, potentially, numerous non parties to devote substantial resources to extraneous discovery while a meritorious motion that could dispose of the entire case is pending."

The filing argued that Meghan was "exercising fundamental First Amendment rights" to free speech (

The filing also argued that Meghan was "exercising fundamental First Amendment rights" to free speech.

According to TMZ, Samantha has previously alleged that Meghan fabricated a story of growing up in "virtual poverty" to bolster her claims of having to deal with leeching family members.
