Met Office forecasts hottest UK day of the year so far

Weather expert Tomasz Schafernacker has apologised for upcoming predictions explaining that they are "very hard to predict" because the weather throughout the week will be "volatile". But the one thing they do know is that it is going to be very warm this week and there is some hope for the weekend.

There will be rain throughout the week, but temperatures are set to be above average with highs of 23°C in Wales on Tuesday. It could be as high as 26°C in London making it the hottest day of the year so far. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms on Sunday night into Monday morning for parts of Wales, and more showers and thunderstorms are expected to drift into the UK from the south throughout the week.

The forecasting service's predictions for Wales this week says: " Monday will be cloudy in the morning with outbreaks of rain, heavy in places. Rain will quickly clear to leave cloudy skies, but turning sunny this afternoon and feeling warm. Maximum temperature 20 °C. Staying dry tonight with clear skies at first. Cloud building from the west with a few showers in the west by the end of the night. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

"Largely dry and bright at first on Tuesday , however skies will cloud over in the afternoon with thundery rain moving into the west. Maximum temperature 23 °C. Dry with sunny spells on Wednesday , heavy rain overnight. Dry and sunny on Thursday , feeling fresher. Cloudier on Friday with showers."

BBC forecaster Tomasz said that the position of the jet stream means that weather throughout the week will be coming in from the south west of the UK. He said on the Countryfile forecast for the week: "Often this time of the year storms from across Siberia, the near continent they get shunted in our direction by the jet stream and that's actually something really difficult to predict, so we are probably going to [get] a lot of complaints out there that we're not gonna get the forecast right but actually, we are doing our best. The areas of rain thundery rain tend to form very quickly and then dissipate and then reform in other areas as well."

But he has offered some hope for the weekend saying: "It's never going to be cold, particularly across England and Wales. If you want some dry, sunny weather. The indication is that this coming weekend is going to be more settled." The BBC Weather's long range forecast says: "In late May we expect the southern half of the country to have a more settled pattern with slightly above average temperatures. Scotland could still see a few wet and windy days. In June the pattern is on the drier side in England and Wales, more seasonal elsewhere. Temperatures look a little above for early summer."
