A 52-year-old man - now charged with attempted murder - was cooling off in the water with a woman on Aug. 9.
When a person offered to take a picture in a park in Valencia, Spain, he fled when a man handed him a mobile phone.
Local media reports said he thought an acquaintance had been involved in the theft and tried to drown her in a fountain. A naked thug (who appears drunk) is shown grabbing a woman by the hair and pressing her head into the water.
One is heard screaming: "He wants to kill her."
As her crowd begged him to let her go, he held on tight until a man in her red top jumped in and strangled him.
Then a second rescuer jumps in and pummels the thugs.
However, it was only when a second man delivered a powerful punch that he let go of the woman's hair, knocking him down.
The freed woman staggered back to dry land wearing only her underwear.
Paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes and took the injured pair to the hospital.
Thugs were treated for cuts to their eyebrows and cheekbones, and victims were treated for blows received during the struggle.
By the time authorities arrived on the scene, the phone thief and his two rescue workers were no longer there.
The man was arrested by the National Police for attempted murder. His name has not been released.
