NHS boss warns over 10,000 will die as energy bills rise in 'humanitarian crisis' this winter

Deep Freeze

More than 10,000 Britons could die this winter when heaters are turned off because of soaring bills, the NHS chief warns.

His NHS Confederation, a group representing trusts across the UK, wrote today to Nadim Zahawi, pleading with the Prime Minister to do more on the bill that has turned a blind eye.

The group warned that the UK would face a "humanitarian crisis" if struggling families were forced to choose between food and heat.

Annual energy costs next April could reach a staggering £5,300. people are dying

NHS Coalition chief executive Matthew Taylor warned that number could tragically increase as inflation spikes.

He said:

"This in turn can lead to the spread of disease and disease across the country, widening health inequalities, diminishing children's life prospects and leaving lasting scars on communities. Yes.”

No10 argues that it will not approve new cost of living subsidies beyond what has already been announced.

Boris Johnson says it will be his successor who will decide the new policy.

In just two weeks, the leadership front-runner Liz His Truss or the underdog Liz His Snacks will be handed the keys to Downing Street.

Both his PM aspirants have vowed to make tackling the mega bill a priority.

But they have different ideas on how to do it.

Rishi Sunak has pledged to immediately reduce her VAT from her electricity bill, leaving the household to his saved £200.

He also pledged to spend another £5 billion to help the hardest-hit Britons, including OAP and low-income workers.

Ms Truss says there is no room for negotiation when it comes to helping Britain through this crisis.

She wants to cut her £30 billion worth of taxes, including her green energy tax, health and social services tax.

The cuts won't have much of an impact on the poorest households, but Ms Truss says she will announce more plans for them if she wins the leadership race.
