Elon Musk has claimed that Apple "threatened" to pull Twitter from its iOS app store as he questioned whether the tech company "hates free speech" in a social media post. He also warned that Twitter witnessed a "massive" drop in revenue.

The Tesla CEO blamed activists for pressuring advertisers.

Mr Musk took aim at Apple in a series of tweets yesterday.

In one post, he said: "Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why."

Mr Musk added: "Do they hate free speech in America?

Cheerios-maker General Mills and German car manufacturer Volkswagen ended paid activities on the social media platform in recent days.

Mr Musk recently revealed Twitter's verification system will become a paid service.

However, a majority of Twitter's revenue currently comes from advertising.

Apple was the top advertiser on Twitter in the first quarter of 2022, the Washington Post has claimed.

The technology company spent around $48million (£40million) on advertisements on the social media platform during the period.

Watchdog site Media Matters reported last week that half of Twitter's top advertisers had pulled their advertising from the social media platform.

Mr Musk's later uploaded a meme which suggested he could "go to war" with Apple.

The picture, which showed a car labelled Elon veering off the right following a "go to war" sign, appeared to relate to the fact that Apple could take up to 30 percent of the money from the monthly fee Twitter plans to charge some users.

Companies listed on Twitter's app store must abide by the company's rules and pay its fees or otherwise risk removal or suspension.

Apple suspended the social media platform Parler from its store last year after it claimed that the free speech-focused network did not do enough to remove hate speech.

Parler was later restored on the app store after it updated its policies.
