Nahuel Molina had put Argentina in front after a sublime pass from Lionel Messi on the edge of the box.

Before Messi doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

  • Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

    92. In the scuffle that followed the full time whistle, there were further yellow cards dished out.

It's been impossible to keep track of which players have been booked, but Jonathan Pearce believes the figure is now up to 12.

  • Kick-off - Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

    91. Well, here we go again.

How do Argentina pick themselves up from that disappointment?

Do the Netherlands continue in the gung-ho fashion that brought them two quick goals?

  • Full time - Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

Antonio Mateu calls time on an extraordinary contest, but that's not the end of the action because it's all going off again between the two sets of players.

They really should conserve their energy for a further 30 minutes.

    Here's Martin Lipton in Qater:

    "Now that IS incredible.

"That’s a version of the free-kick Argentina scored against England in St Etienne in 1998.

"But in the 100th minute. To take it to extra-time.

"Brilliant deception by one sub, completed by another.

"Koopmeiners caught the entire Argentine defence off guard by rolling inside the wall but Weghorst still had so much to do.

"Back in 1978, a Dutch substitute named Dick Naninga came off the bench to take it to extra-time - and was the thickness of the  woodwork away from putting his side in front.

    "No idea what happens next…"

  • Netherlands 2-2 Argentina

90+11. Astonishing! Wout Weghorst at the double!

The Netherlands super substitute has sent this quarter-final to extra-time by finishing off one of the smartest free-kicks you will ever see.

Teun Koopmeiners shapes to shoot through a packed wall, but instead disguises a slipped pass through the middle.

Weghorst is on to it in a flash, taking a touch to control before swivelling a cushioned left-footed shot past Emi Martinez.

    It's absolutely incredible!

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

    99+10. It's not over yet!

The Dutch win another free-kick 22 yards out after Weghorst is bundled over by Pezzella.

Messi has gone into the book, presumably for dissent.

This is it. Koopmeiners and Gakpo stand over the free-kick...

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

90+8. It's taken until late in the day, but Martin Keown has just pronounced Argentina as 'Argentinia' again.

Meanwhile, Mac Allister wins a free-kick off Berghuis upfield, and some of the Argentina players celebrate as if they have the game won.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

90+6. I don't know about total football, but Netherlands are giving Wimbledon of the 1980s and 90s a run for their money.

Two big men up top in De Jong and Weghorst, and it's going long.

Hell, even Van Dijk is staying up front now.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

90+5. Argentina have stopped playing now, and it's all about keeping the Dutch out.

Their reasoning is easy to understand, but you wonder how they would regain any momentum for extra-time if they were to concede.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

90+3. Gakpo looks set to take it, but out of nowhere Berghuis enters the frame to strike it straight into the wall.

The young forward that won it looks bemused that he didn't get to take it.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

90+2. Gakpo is brought down just outside the D, and the Netherlands have a free-kick 20 yards from goal.

It's very central, but a great opportunity for the Dutch to draw level.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

    90. There will be TEN minutes of stoppage time.

That's more than enough time for the Dutch to send this quarter-final to extra-time.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

    88. It's all kicking off!

Paredes brings down Ake with a cynical challenge, and then immediately follows it up by booting the ball at the Dutch bench.

Unsurprisingly, the Netherlands substitutes to a man respond by charging at the Argentina midfielder.

One of the players on the pitch, Van Dijk, gets their first, and sends Paredes flying to the floor with a shove.

These are the scenes that commentators tell us that we don't want to see, but we all love anyway.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina - Berghuis yellow card

    87. On the break, a slight trip from Steven Berghuis ends with another booking.

The Spanish referee does make some odds decisions.

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

    85. De Jong heads down! Berghuis strikes! Equaliser!

No! It's crashed into the side netting!

  • Netherlands 1-2 Argentina

    83. The Dutch have late hope!

Off the bench, Wout Weghorst has got one back with what is only the Netherlands' second attempt on target.

The giant striker, on the books of Burnley, meets an early cross from Steven Berghuis to head beyond Emi Martinez.

What a finish we have in store!

  • Netherlands 0-2 Argentina

    80. Julian Alvarez is off, and on comes Lautaro Martinez.

  • Netherlands 0-2 Argentina

    78. Another flurry of substitutions deny the Dutch one final flourish.

Nicolas Tagliafico and German Pezzella are on for the Argentines, replacing Marcos Acuna and Cristian Romero.

  • Netherlands 0-2 Argentina

    76. Appeals for a Netherlands penalty are waved away by Antonio Mateu.

It was Berghuis who went down in the area under a clumsy challenge, and on first viewing, he looked as though he had a case.

  • Netherlands 0-2 Argentina

    75. Luuk de Jong and Emi Martinez square up after the Argentina physically claims a cross looped into the area.

The Dutch substitute isn't happy, and neither are his frustrated teammates.

In the pushing and shoving that follows, yellow cards are shown to the Argentina goalkeeper and Memphis Depay.

Meanwhile, Martin Lipton details Argentina's second:

"At least I got that one right.

"Dumfries gets more than enough of Acuna to make up the Spanish referee’s mind for him and Messi clips home with utter assurance.

"Another ear-splitting scream from the massed Argentine ranks.

    "Watch out Croatia.

    "They’re coming. He’s coming."

  • Netherlands 0-2 Argentina

    73. Undeterred by his miss from the spot against Poland, Lionel Messi steps up and cooly beats Andries Noppert.

A slight stutter on the run-up leaves the giant goalkeeper rooted to the spot before the Argentina captain whips his left-footer stylishly into the corner.

A fourth goal at this tournament for the little magician, who is taking his nation through to a World Cup semi-final.

  • Netherlands 0-1 Argentina - Penalty to Argentina

    71. Dumfries brings down Acuna with a lazy challenge just inside the box, and Argentina have a penalty!

  • Netherlands 0-1 Argentina

    69. The latest Netherlands attack is broken by a foul awarded against Koopmeiners for a nudge on Romero.

The wily centre-back takes as much time as he can in picking himself up off the turf.
