Nick Kyrgios beats world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in Montreal

Nick Kyrgios continued his career-best run by defeating world number one Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Masters on Wednesday. This victory surprised everyone. But Australian.

Kyrgios, who was charged with confidence after reaching the Wimbledon final and winning the tournament in Washington last week said victory was a sign of something. A career-high who reacted with disappointment to a question that suggested it should be a career high.

"You guys act like I've never beaten a world number one," he told reporters in Montreal.

"I've beaten Medvedev. I beat Roger (Federer), Novak (Djokovic), Rafa (Nadal).

"He's the best in the world. We played each other three times, he hit me once, I hit him twice.

"Today is a big point. I feel more confident in my game and under pressure than ever before. That's all I've really done," Medvedev said Wednesday. Joining three of the other top five seeds who were eliminated in the second round, he started the draw at the US Open warm-up.

His lack of points ranking at Wimbledon this year means Kyrgios is still ranked 37th in the world and unseeded in Montreal.

"It's just his one game as a whole," he said of his 6-7 (2) 6-4 6-2 win.

"This doesn't mean we're in the top 10. We've only got one match left, so we need to prepare for the next one." Playing against compatriot Alex de Minaur, Kyrgios said he'd rather stick with his tune-up event than rest for Flushing Meadows.

"I think the best way to live my life is to try to get a little better every day," he said.

"I was able to go to the U.S. Open and feel fresh and play somebody on a day that was too good to be true. Then you'll regret not taking everything out of the Montreal tank in Cincinnati." Let's go."
