North Lanarkshire Council to make £15,000 donation to Pakistan floods fund

North Lanarkshire Council will make a £15,000 charitable donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to assist with the catastrophic floods in Pakistan.

Following full agreement from elected members the donation to the DEC is to help fund its members charities’ UK-based activities whose resources are being put under considerable strain as they respond to the crisis affecting Pakistan.

The DEC brings together 15 leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently at times of crisis overseas.

By pooling resources to work as one campaign, the DEC co-ordinates the UK public’s response to overseas disasters, assisting people in life and death situations and save, protect and rebuild lives through effective humanitarian response.

Latest figures from the DEC say that six million people are in need of urgent help following the climate catastrophe, with people left homeless, hundreds dying and whole villages cut off from support after rivers burst their banks and landslides swamped vast regions.

Council Leader Jim Logue, said: “The devastating floods in Pakistan are having a ravaging impact on people and communities, with many left without any support and are at risk of starvation and disease.

“This council, as one of a number of authorities, is making a charitable donation on behalf of the people of North Lanarkshire to assist the DEC’s UK-based charity efforts as they are under increased pressure to support people in Pakistan.

“People in Pakistan must be facing unimaginable devastation and if this donation can help in any way, then lives could be saved and people who need urgent assistance can be supported.

“It is truly overwhelming to watch what is happening and we must do all that we can to assist. If people in North Lanarkshire would like to support, I would urge them to do so through the DEC appeal.”
