Nuclear scare as UN secretary-general warns damage to Ukrainian factory would be 'suicide'

Guterres added that any damage to plants is "suicide". He made the comments during a summit meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in theUkrainian city of Lviv.

The meeting between Mr. Guterres and Mr. Zelensky was the first since the Russian invasion began in February.

Russia occupied the area surrounding the power plant in March, and heavy artillery shelling has been taking place near the power plant in recent weeks.

Kyiv and Moscow hold each other responsible for the attack.

Ahead of the meeting, Mr Zelensky accused Russia of a "deliberate" attack on factories.

Russia has been accused of converting factories into military bases.

All three leaders called on Moscow to demilitarize the region as soon as possible.

It was after Ukrainian staff working at the facility under Russian military command warned of a potential nuclear catastrophe.

They claim the facility has been "targeted by continued military attacks" in the past two weeks.

A member of staff wrote in the Telegram post: "What is happening is horrific and goes beyond common sense and morality." claimed to have left.

They also claimed that an "unexpected holiday" had been announced.

, tweeted that Moscow was preparing "provocations" and "terrorist attacks" at factories.

They said: ``Ukrainian intelligence officials believe the Russians are preparing a provocation at [the facility]. After that, [Russian forces] could risk "and mount a real terrorist attack on Europe's largest nuclear facility."

Zelensky also used social media channels to It warned that "the world is on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe," adding that "Russia's irresponsible actions

but the Zaporizhia power plant was the worst nuclear power plant in history in April when Ukraine was a Soviet republic." It is said to be much safer than the Chernobyl power plant north of Kyiv, where the accident occurred.

Experts told the BBC in March that the reactor was built of reinforced concrete. It was found in buildings and claimed to be able to "withstand extreme external events".
