Passengers trapped in locked station after train arrived more than 90 minutes late

About 30 passengers were stranded at a locked Lake District station late Tuesday night after a train arrived more than an hour and a half late.

Train travelers disembarked the Avanti West Coast train at Oxenholme near Kendal, Cumbria. Around midnight on August 16th, almost two hours after arriving atLondon Euston. The Glasgow service was scheduled to arrive at 10:20 PM.

Mr Fallon called for an investigation, saying the incident "could have become dangerous very quickly". .

"There is clearly a systemic failure going on at Avanti that we cannot afford to let go.

"I have already written to Avanti asking them to explain their oversight.

"We now need to ask whether Avanti is the right entity to run the franchise.

"The Ministry of Transport , should seriously consider discontinuing the franchise."

Avanti said it was "sorry to hear about the customer's experience," and said it was investigating the incident.
