Debris from the plane fell from the sky and nearly hit the police.

A metal object, believed to have fallen from a jet, crash-landed in close proximity to the police officer.

The object clattered against the granite that formed the cobbled walkways of the Maine State Capitol. According to Police Chief Matthew Clancy, it missed a Capitol security guard by just six to eight feet. "He was walking back to the building and there was quite a wake-up call for him."

A metal sleeve almost hit the building, the police chief added.

An alert was sent to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Friday, and officials went to the state capitol on Monday to recover and investigate the object, reported NBC News .

According to the FAA, the object weighed between 6 and 7 pounds and may have broken a wing flap on a large jetliner.

The airline has been notified of the object. All planes landed safely on the day of the incident.

According to Clancy, the object crashed in an area where the Maine legislature was in session and is usually a high trafficking area. Protests and press conferences are frequent.
