Review: Wilderness Safari Little Clara, Namivia

With its own entrance to the adjacent national park, Little Clara on the Wilderness Safari is one of Namivia's most fascinating attractions: the huge sand dunes and miraculous water drinks of Sossusbray. It is in the best place for the occasion.

After a recent refurbishment, Little Clara has a modern and unobtrusive elegance. Wood and thatch are the main materials, but your attention may be directed to the outside rather than the inside. The lodge enjoys a truly spectacular environment of mountains, plains and rippling sand.

Where is it?

Deep in the Namib Desert in western Namivia, Little Clara is located in the 65,000-acre Clara Wilderness Reserve. The camp itself is 10 miles south of Sesreim, about 5 hours drive from the capital Windhoek (some along the gravel road). Many guests choose to fly from Windhook International Airport on a light aircraft that takes about an hour.

Landscape

Namib is the finest landscape. The sky is thrown, the land is empty, and sand, rocks, and mountains look endless. Most of its beauty is of a glittering and striking variety, but there are also softer landscapes, such as rolling hills and grassy plains. If you're lucky, you'll be exposed to the unusual sight of a flowering desert after a rain (probably arriving in March and April, but staying dry for a few years). Dormant grass and shrubs come to life and cover the plains with yellow flowers.

The rest of the year is not so spectacular. The grass dries quickly, sparkling gold in the bright red sand of the dunes, reaching a height of 1,250 feet. The mornings and evenings are particularly impressive and shine in the diagonal sunshine.
