Rio Ferdinand sends message to Manchester United players as Harry Maguire is defended

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines for Tuesday, March 8.

Ferdinand sends message to United players

Former centre-back Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United's players to 'graft and be humble', recalling what Sir Alex Ferguson used to demand of his players during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand made the plea following Sunday's 4-1 hammering to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Despite encouraging signs early on in the first half, United were woeful after the break and allowed City to knock the ball around with ease.

Pep Guardiola's side dominated the contest in the second period and did so without getting out of first gear. It was another forgettable showing from United and one, in the second half, that lacked fight, dedication and passion.

Harry Maguire is defended

Harry Maguire may be in a bad run of form but he 'hasn't become a bad defender overnight'.

That's according to former Premier League centre-back Curtis Davies, who has moved to defend the United captain after he came in for more criticism. Maguire had another difficult afternoon on Sunday as United were battered 4-1 by neighbours City.

Maguire wasn't the only United defender to produce a sub-par display at the weekend. A number of individuals made mistakes in the build-up to City's goals at the Etihad and Davies has defended the England international.
