The man charged with stabbing author Salman Rushdie has pleaded not guilty to attempted second-degree murder.
Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old, Iranian sympathizer, appeared in court Thursday morning in an attack on the 75-year-old author of Satanic Poetry.
District Attorney Jason Schmidt said of Mattar in court: He argued that Matar should remain in custody.
Matar is being held without bail.
He had previously pleaded not guilty to his one count of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault in last Friday's attack.
If convicted of attempted murder and assault charges, Matar could face a maximum sentence of 32 years in prison. He has no previous criminal record.
