Scots warn about barbecues as fire brigade responds to 'dozens' calls

Scots should be careful when using barbecues after new statistics show they were responsible for dozens of emergency calls to fire brigade. I was warned.

Lib Dem MSP Liam McArthur advises the public to be careful when setting fire to or disposing of devices as temperatures are set to soar in Scotland today. called out to the public.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has reported 161 fires involving barbecues since 2017/18, according to a freedom of information request by the party.

McArthur said:

``These numbers show that these barbecues have spiraled out of control dozens of times. Fires are spreading more uncontrollably than ever before, damaging property and the beautiful natural environment.

The public is urged to never leave the barbecue and to always wait for the ashes to cool before placing them in the ashes.”

The Orkney MSP also puts more pressure on SFRS. Medium has asked the Scottish government to support this service.

This comes after the fire department announced that the risk of wildfires in the south and east of the country was "extremely high" as temperatures reached record highs.

McArthur added:

"It is not sustainable. SFRS needs to be properly resourced and equipped to meet the challenges it faces every day."

Scottish Government Spokesperson : "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service makes it clear that people should act responsibly when using and disposing of barbecue.

"Barbecue, including disposable items, It should never be left unattended and should be made sure it has cooled completely before disposing of it safely with all other waste."
