Scottish workers call for urgent rent freeze to protect tenants struggling with cost of living

Anas Sarwar today calls for an emergency rent freeze to be implemented as soon as MSPs return from next month's summer vacation.

Scottish Labor leader makes party plans to help those struggling with a cost of living crisis.

The key part is an emergency law that freezes rentshe he for nine months, with the option to extend the policy for up to two years.

Exceptions can be included in the law to prevent landlords from facing serious hardship.

A similar proposal submitted by his MSP of the Labor Party he Mercedes Villalbaearlier this year he was rejected by the SNP and the green minister.

Sarwar said:

"That is why the Scottish Labor Party is asking the Scottish Parliament to introduce an emergency bill as a starting point for a response to help people without delay.

38} "While bills were skyrocketing and wages were struggling to keep up with inflation, the SNP had the power to help people, but they couldn't take it.

“Nothing is more obvious than rising rents. Ministers rejected requests to freeze just months ago. Cash-strapped tenants need help now and those facing evictions because of this crisis.

"But now that people are facing unimaginable difficulties, facing a national crisis, they must rethink and change their common sense.

Mr. Villalba said:

“The SNP/green government must work with Labor on this issue and use a majority in Holyrood to pass an immediate rent freeze when MSPs return after the summer holidays.

Several charities wrote to Nicola Sturgeon, urging him to do whatever it takes to help those on the lowest incomes.

Organizations such as Trussell Trust, Save the Children, Poverty Alliance and Robertson Trust are calling for immediate cash assistance to families.

The signatories of the letter have doubled the planned 'tether payment' for families with children who receive free school meals and have asked the Scottish government to receive Scottish meals. We are asking families to introduce more one-time payments. Child payments and city tax relief, and double winter heating subsidies for children.
