Man arrested after several injured in 'machete attack' near Premier League stadium

A suspect in a machete attack has been arrested by police after a 'horrific' incident left many with cuts.

Merseyside police were called to the streets of Anfield and received reports of a man armed with a weapon shouting at people.

Many victims were believed to have suffered injuries, some requiring hospital treatment, although none were life-threatening.

A male suspect from the area was detained at Stanley Park shortly after.

He was later arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

According to police, the incident is not believed to be terrorism related and the suspect is believed to have mental health problems.

Witnesses say they saw a man with a "giant machete" on Liverpool Echo Told.

He said: "We crossed the road and he passed us. After about 20 seconds a young man with a stab wound in his arm ran towards us. Then we saw him [the knifeman] walking down the street into the house.

A police cordon is currently in place at the scene as the investigation continues. (

Chief Detective Cath Cummings said: he will do his best to support you.

``We understand the situation can be frightening for the wider Anfield community. and closed the case, with no ongoing threat to the public.

Additional officers will be deployed on high-visibility patrols in the Anfield area for the next few days.”

A spokesman added: "Although the investigation is in the very early stages, the incident is not believed to be related to terrorism and the suspect is believed to have mental health problems."[57]
