SSPCA seeks information after bird injured in illegal springer trap in Lanarkshire village had to be put to sleep

Caught in an illegal springer trap in Lanarkshire, a jackdaw suffered a "bad injury" that required him to sleep to end his suffering.

The SSPCA is seeking information after the afflicted bird was found in the village of Plains near Airdrie on May 18.

An animal welfare charity was alerted to the incident by its members. Common people who found live birds in traps.

A force inspector, who cannot be named because of the SSPCA Special Investigation undercover, told Lanarkshire Live:

"The bird's left leg was caught in a trap. An autopsy showed that the leg had a severe open fracture and was partially amputated, causing severe pain and suffering.

"Springer traps were set up illegally and had deer legs scattered around as bait. This appears to be a deliberate attempt to attract wild birds.

39} "We appeal to local communities to pass on information about those who are illegally killing birds, especially birds of prey.

"These traps are illegal, indiscriminate and Causes unnecessary distress to trapped birds and animals.

"If anyone knows who this device belongs to, please call the animal helpline immediately 03000 999 We strongly encourage you to call 999. All calls can be treated confidentially.

``Similarly, if someone is caught in such an illegal or suspected illegal trap. If you find any trouble, feel free to contact us."
