Recent storms have brought wet weather to the country for weeks.

Experts say the unseasonably wet weather is due to narrow streams of water vapor, or 'atmospheric rivers', above the country.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have hit New Zealand's North Island over the past 24 hours.

Some towns have been blocked, roads and houses submerged, and people evacuated.

Civil Defense Northland said in a Facebook post that today's low tide is expected to ease some flooding, but some roads remain closed.

A heavy rain warning is in effect until midnight Friday.
