A rare condition in a toddler who was dragging his leg backwards when running was discovered

Dean McHugh first noticed something was wrong when he took his daughter Marnie to an athletics class. As her toddler tried to run, she looked like an "injured soldier" and dragged her leg back.

The Dean (39 years old) immediately booked a doctor's visit, but it took some time before he was diagnosed.

After her personal visit, Marnie was found to have had a rare disease called Langerhans cell histiocytosis. This caused her inoperable tumor to grow on her hip joint.

"This is a very rare disease, and only one in a million children develops it," says Dean. "Not much is known about it. Some tissues classify it as cancer, and some don't."

Marnie, a bright and talkative four-year-old, is a Great Ormond. TheChemotherapy Coursestarted at Street Hospital [GOSH] for 6 months and ended in February. ..

"It's a great time now. Now she's at the end of her treatment, but she's also nervous," explains Dean. "Obviously, she doesn't do weekly blood tests, so she's not being monitored very much." I have just finished the monthly infusion course. But her youth has improved a lot. "She can run, she won't stop now," Dean laughs.

Dean also started running regularly to pay tribute to her for this and to give back to her organization that helped her.

"I continue to think that a 3-year-old child has experienced what he or she has experienced, probably more than most adults experience in their lifetime," Dean said. increase. "If she can get through all of them, a grown-up adult should be able to run and walk 26 miles."

"For Great Ormond Street, where I and my family are so loving. And it's a great place to run, "adds Dean. "We just want to work hard and give back. Hopefully this is the beginning of many kinds of fundraiser we can do on their behalf.
