Tribute to 'amazing' young Scotsman who died after fatal fall in Ecuador volcano

A tribute to the young Scottish man who fell to his death from a volcano in Ecuador.

Gilbanks was fatally injured while attempting to climb the Pichincha volcano near Quito on Sunday, August 14.

He hails from Newton, Mearns, and traveled through South America after completing his military service in the Elite Corps before immigrating to Israel with his family.

Her heartbroken friends pay tribute to her 25-year-old athlete on her social media.

Eduardo Finkelstein trained Gil for triathlon a few years ago and said he was a "very good runner".

He added: "I have no words. My condolences to the family. Gil Banks started triathlon at Buttons (Caesarea) where I was head triathlon coach. I remember his wild red hair.

"At the time, Gil and I had a lot in common. Neither of us spoke Hebrew very well, but we always found funny and interesting ways to understand each other." (He also helped me with my English.)

My friend said Gil was exceptional.

"My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. My heartfelt condolences and unwavering condolences." I ask for your support, I wish you peace, comfort, courage, and much love during this time of sorrow.My heart goes out to you in this difficult time.

Gil's death was announced by the Israeli Embassy in Ecuador. 81} Twitter Confirmed on Tuesday 16 August.

They wrote: "The Israeli Embassy in Ecuador announced on Sunday, August 14, that a young Israeli, Gil, who had fallen while trying to climb the Lucu Pichincha volcano in Quito, Ecuador, had died.

``The Embassy is proceeding with the response following the death of a 25-year-old Israeli. We express our solidarity with this loss and extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends."

Born in London, Banks was raised in Glasgow and raised inNewton Mearns. He attended Mearns Castle High School.

With a Glaswegian father and an English mother, the family then moved to Caesarea, Israel.

His Facebook page has now been changed to 'In memory of Gil his Banks'.
