Unbreakable viewers slam BBC for ‘wasting public money’ on ‘dire’ show

THE BBC's new reality series Unbreakable has been panned by viewers who have declared the series 'unwatchable' and 'a waste of their TV licence'.

The series, hosted by Rob Beckett, aims to put celebrities and their loved ones to a series of tests, including physical and mental challenges, to prove their bond is as strong as they think it is.

Participants were: Denise Welch and her husband Lincoln Townley, Simon Weston and his wife Lucy, comedian Stephen Bailey and his partner Rich Taylor, and Strictly's Shirley Ballas with her other half Danny Taylor, Charlie Mullins OBE and RaRa, and finally Teddy Edwardes and Shanaze Reade.

As they get put through their paces, they are further tested by relationship experts who award them points for their efforts, with eliminations taking place until one couple remain standing.

In episode one, the gang all met for the first time before being put on a late in a communication test where they had to navigate a pontoon using only two planks of wood. If they fell into the water, they had to start again.

Other challenges include a tandem bungee jump where they're forced to face their fears together.

However, it appears for a lot of viewers the biggest test was one of endurance to get through the first installment of the six-episode series. Some were critical of the series and the celebrities involved, while others found the content hard to watch.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Honestly I’m absolutely disgusted that my BBC license fee has been used to make the absolute trash that is #unbreakable. had to Google who all the other celebs were except Simon Weston."

Another jested: "I'm guessing the main criteria for this show at the brain storming session was to devise a show that p***ed the licence fee up the wall."

While another labelled it a "cheap and dire programme", one viewer added: "First and last watch of #unbreakable Awful."

"Only caught a couple of minutes but this really is absolute dross! #unbreakable" added another.

While a final fan added the theory: "Judging by the quality of celebrities on this, it's looking very likely ITV have stolen the decent ones for this years I'm A Celeb."

However, there were some viewers who were taken in by the show by the episode's end if they chose to stick it out, praising its unique premise and crediting those involved for putting themselves and their relationships out in the open.

"I started watching thinking this would be s**t, but suddenly with this task I am enjoying seeing them work & encourage together," one wrote. "Teddy you did great, don’t be upset with yourself I wouldn’t have even got up in the air."

Unbreakable continues next Thursday at 8pm on BBC One.
