Water companies leak 2.4 billion liters of water every day as Britons face drought and hosepipe bans

The country's nine water companies leak nearly 2.4 billion liters of water every day while paying their chief executives hefty bonuses.

The scale of the leak comes amid concerns that the UK is facing a prolonged drought after a very dry summer, prompting a ban on hose pipes to more homes..

Over the past two years, UK water company bosses have received a total of £24.3m, The Times reports.

Thames Water, the UK's largest water company, is the biggest culprit, leaking an average of 605 million liters of water a day over a three-year period.

The company, which serves areas such as Greater London, Thames Valley, Surrey and Gloucestershire, said 24% of its supply was leaking. Boss Sarah Bentley has been paid her £3.2m over the past two years.

Severn Trent Her water supply to the Midlands leaked her 446 million liters of water per day. Its chief executive, Liv Garfield, has nearly her £7m since 2020.
